k, I got one especially for all you.  It has served me well, but as with the game goes on, there are better ships to be made.  however, as designing it, it should be a good ship with which to experiment, or use as is.  whatever you wish.  simply open up the game's design room in another window, and plug in the numbers.

--Ship:
name: mauler att version
space: 50

--Powercore:
name: Mauler att PC
Space: 15
Cost: 1
Energy Req: 1943

--Special:
name: Mauler att SP
weight: 30
Cost: 10
Energy Req: 1500
DEF Bonus: 0%
Defence: +20
Hitpoints: +251

--Weapon:
name: Mauler att WE
weight: 5
cost: 3
Energy Req: 443
Attack: 39813
ACU: 1%

use the name as you want, change it, whatever.  it is my gift to all new people starting off.  there is more then one way that this design CAN be improved, but it will be better for you to figure those out YOURSELF.    so as I said, just a little something for all the new people  ;D

Here's what I recommend new people use:

space: around 50
Attack: no higher then 800,000
Defense: 100 should do
acc: 1%
defense bonus: 1%
Abs: 0-2%
Hitpoints: 1,000-2,000
energy: no more then 100,000
Marines: 0 (This means the marine upgrade, not marines on your ship)

luffy, try designing a sheild with 1-2% ABS.  you will find out very quickly at that point, you may as well go up to 5%, at the minimum.  also, 800k attack is kinda high to.  acc should never be 1% unless you are going for a powership. think about it, my regular powerships that get blown up way to easily without actually doing a whole lot is 2 MIL per ship.  12 mil if at full swarm.  yet it just doesn't do the same damage. why?  ACC.  observe:

800k at 1% will equal 8k total damage actually done
increase it to 2% by sacrificing 1k attack (which may actually be 100, not 1k)
799k at 2% will equal 15.98 total damage actually done.

now of course, there is that point where increasing ACC will actually reduce the attack so much that it will actually lessen actual damage, but that depends on how high an attack it is already.  but as you see, unless high attack alone is what you are trying for, 1% is never good.  the folowing is for the lower attack amount for further demonstration:

17k at 1% will equal 170 actual damage
16k at 2% will equal 320 actual damage
14k at 3% will equal 420 actual damage
10k at 4% will equal 400 actual damage
02k at 5% will equal 100 actual damage

I didn't mean for right out of the gate, I meant for a little ways into the game. I have a ship design like this and it holds up well once you get your account going.

For balancing out the designs of equipment to lower cost, is there a rough formula for it or does it just come through experience and practice? Lol yeah I'm a noob...

There are formulas people use, but those are ones they've made up, no one knows if those are actually the formulas used or not. But after a while you get a feel for it.
