sry for posting two threads but this one is rly unrelated to my other and i also think less controversial. In the rankings and when we go to attack an enemy mother-ship we can tell how many segs it has. i propose the same for planets. while i agree that seeing a planet's capacity should be something gleaned by scanning... our sensors should be able to figure the rough size of a planet prty easily. this will let commanders get a rough feel for how many colonists there might be, production lvls, potential bases etc without being too specific.

I'm pretty sure you can already do this if you scan a planet. here is a quote from the planet wiki:

Planet Raid tactic

- Raids are simple, click on the planet, click attack and select raid. You can raid at any time, however take great care to minimize your losses, try to scan the planet first and see if it has something worth raiding, if not it's best to leave it alone as your marine losses will have to be lower then the captured goods. However, if you want to destroy a rival planet economy, you can do so with raiding, but be careful of the costs involved on your part, usually turns and marine casualties.

Of course you need to research subspace scanner first to do this.

ya... IF u scan. i'm saying just show it next to its name like with motherships OR be consistent and require scanning to see mothership size.

The planet is too big to hide. You would need the equivalent in energy of a class M (Sol) star to generate enough to cloak a planet. You do not have the technology to make such an achievement yet.

Back on topic, you can scan everything on the planet. The planet is specifically directing all energy to prevent you from gathering any information on it.
However, if you study the planet atmosphere (pic), you may be able to find some info...

still... he has a point... assuming that planets are still going to be round (or at least mostly round) all one would need is some math and distance figures... both of which should be easily available in the space age this game is portraying.

it doesn't have to be exact, you could have it be with a margin of error of up to 10% either way (like I said, this is assuming it's round, when it may not nesesarily be completely round which can always throw off the figures) if anything it's the size of motherships that should be hidden...

and what I mean by this is I do believe even right now scientists can already guess how big the other planets in the solar system are, and we've never got anywhere close to some of them... if we can do that now, how much more should that be possible in the space age?

however just because you can see the size of it doesn't mean everything.  it may show max amount of people on it, but it says nothing about amount of tech, buildings, and any cloaked ships in orbit.

btw... you should make an orbital station defense force.  these are permanently cloaked stations orbiting the planet, that houses soldiers in case the planet it attacked.  of course it would cost to make them, and even have it be a continous drain on the economy of the planet (have to keep them close enough to planet to help, but not to close where they land prematurely)  like you could have an additional 25-50% marines housed in space where it won't count for planet size.  depending on the size of the tech and resources spent in it.

Ya, I agree. You should be able to tell the approximate size of a planet with a little math. And ars, not only can we tell the size of the planets in our soloar system but scientist can actually mesuare the size of a planet orbiting another star lightyears away. They get the mass of the planet by measureing the wobble of the star (it wobbles because gravity pulls both ways), then they get the size of the planet when it moves in front of the star (they measure how much light it blocks out). then with that information they can find the size, the mass, and what it is made of.

lol would be funny if ud scan a planet from 1000 lightyears away, go there to invade and find the defense 100 times more advanced then was on the scan

ya, lol, all it would show is how big the planet is, not what's on it, or even anything orbiting it...

so you land and find out it's not a planet... it's the deathstar!
