I was just thinking, there is more then one game (especially card games, yu-gi-oh for one to be exact, but there are others, obviously) that I always though to be very simple, 'whoever has the highest stats, wins' where I was then very quickly stopped thinking that when I saw some games start being played. where simple 'environment' things (in those instances, cards, here, items) would completely change everything.
now, obviously, you can't go VERY detailed into them, being having everything happening at once, but I was thinking some simple things would really make it interesting, these are some, with side effects they would have:
Unstable Nebula field: completely negates attack, for both sides. no damage to either side, but marines still launch.
High density area: boarders cannot engage each other, with marine battle never started, no marines lost, no ships captured. however, ships still can attack each other.
then the others could be variations of these: 200% attack increase to all sides all ships captured destroyed 50% attack reduction on all sides
now, you may think, big deal, but think, (barring first two, as those would have to be extremely rare, and negated by simply attacking a second time) you could send kamikaze ships, then send in a 200% attack item, coupled with a 20% attack item to your ships, you would greatly increase odds to completely blow up enemy ships. if you put in a 50% damage reduction, with same above situation (supership vs. kamikaze swarm) you would take less damage to survive, but also do enough damage to knock out some of their ships, allowing you to follow up with a 2nd, to knock off the rest.
the obvious difference here, being, a signifacant stat upped, but in order to use it, it would also give the other side the same as well.
