With the highly anticipated Early Access launch of Path of Exile 2 (PoE 2) on November 15th, the gaming community is abuzz with excitement. As a part of our series covering PoE 2's mechanics, we'll delve into the world of Spirit, a new resource that's set to revolutionize the way players approach gameplay.
Spirit: The New ResourceIn PoE 2, Spirit is a completely new resource that doesn't exist in Path of Exile 1. This resource will be used for auras and other reservation skills, effectively combatting the issue of characters reserving the majority of their Mana pool against auras. Players will be able to invest in obtaining more Spirit through specific gear modifiers and the redesigned scepter one-handed weapon, which grants a lot of Spirit as a baseline and has rollable modifiers to improve Spirit gain.
Permanent Spirit will also be obtainable from specific bosses in the campaign, similar to skill points coming from bosses in the PoE 1 campaign. This new mechanic will allow players to have more control over their resource management and build diversity.
Spirit will not only be used for auras but also for every other reservation skill, including some returning abilities from PoE 1 with new twists. Additionally, Spirit will be used to enable trigger-based metagems, such as the new barrier invocation ability or Caston shock. These metagems will reserve a set amount of Spirit to allow the socketed spells to be triggered under specific conditions.
In PoE 2, permanent minions will reserve Spirit in order to be used, while non-permanent minions with durations will not reserve any Spirit and will simply have an associated Mana cost. This change to minions is huge, and the balance in terms of how much Spirit is used to maintain these permanent minions needs to be just right.
Totems and Ancestral BondWhen used in combination with ancestral bonds, this Keystone in PoE 2 has been redesigned and will now completely remove the limit on the number of placed totems. However, each totem placed will reserve 50 Spirit. This mechanic is particularly interesting, and the balance in terms of that reservation number of 50 Spirit per totem needs to be just right.
Weapon Swap Tech and ReservationsIn PoE 2, reservations will also utilize the new weapon swap tech. Players will be able to choose which weapon set they want to use when using a specific skill, and their character will automatically switch that set before using the ability. Players will be able to reserve skills based on weapon sets too and dynamically swap which reservations they are using based on the weapon set currently equipped.
Early Access and Supporter PacksIn a recent statement, Grinding Gear Games announced that supporter packs will be the way to enter Path of Exile 2's Early Access. However, players who meet a threshold of Lifetime support in Path of Exile 1 will also be invited to participate in Early Access without needing to purchase a key. The supporter packs will range from $30 to $480, with the lowest cost pack getting you a key, cosmetic items, and access to Early Access.
