I scouted a player who showed 0 ships on the ranking page ...
When I sent a scouting party, not only did he have a fleet defending his base, he was also able to ambush my fleet as I retreated.

Is this normal and something I need to be careful of?
I mean 0 ships does not mean no ships?

The Rankings page can sometimes take a while to update, which is always why I scout with a few insignificant ships first.

it updates every 10 minunts so when som1 gets attacked hard it may show them as 0 ships when they really have some left

Mostly this happens when if I ahve 300001 ships and you destroy 300000 of them it shows I have zero.

sometimes when ive been attacked during the night and lost the 30k decoys i used, i could check the rankings and have 0 ships while really having maybe 4 or 5 decoy fleets left (with 1 ship in each) plus a big ship. could probably been hours since the last attacker attacked me but still it wouldnt update. actually, it wouldnt update until i made 30k new decoys sometimes.

The ranking page is tempermental, so always assume your enemy has ships left, and scout before attacking with weak, useless ships. This prevents a major backfire of your attack.
