Tolkien is good, I like Tom Clancy's series about Jack Ryan, and you might look at Frank Peretti.
Frank Peretti is a Christian author but a couple of his books don't really mention anything religious so you don't have to worry about that (those couple being Monster and House).

really, it shouldn't matter if the author is whatever religion or if the books mention religion. a good book is a good book.

Ender's Game is a brilliant example. Mormon author, he mentions a small amount of religion, puts in some of the Mormon beliefs on behavior, yet its an amazing book/series)

I know just some people think its a big deal so I mentioned it.
Also another good author is Timothy Zahn (the creator of Admiral Thrawn).

I'll just post random smatterings of books/series that I've loved.
The Prince - Machiavelli
The Messenger - Markus Zusak
The Book Thief - Markus Zusak (:3)
Fly By Night - Frances Hardinge
The Horus Heresy - Various
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More - Roald Dahl (An interesting contrast to most of his other literature - one of my favourites when I was younger)

Yes hence the reason I did not post in it. You see unlike you I'm a perfectly nice likable human being.

Unlike you who's soul has been tarnish so much Satin could not tell it from its own.
