Gladiator Slicks and Cougar Gunships

View Profile
« on: February 21, 2007, 11:51:20 PM »

Hello everyone.
Someone left this game up on the public access computer that they had last used, and I was feeling pretty bored, so I figured I would give it a shot.
I served with the 57th Helicopter Assault Division, flying Gladiator Slicks and Cougar Gunships.

If any other veterans or active military members want to post here it would be great.

-Charles

AIR FORCE. My last base was the 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron, Soesterberg AB - Netherlands. We were called the Wolfhounds. The base was semi-shut down in 1994 and will be closing its doors for good in 2007.

Fun facts: The 32nd Fighter Squadron' insignia was designed by the Walt Disney Studios during World War II to symbolize the squadron's mission of searching for enemy submarines operating in groups called "wolfpacks" in the Caribbean. In 1959, the 32nd became the only U.S. Air Force unit in the world authorized to bear the royal crest of another country, when the crown and wreath were added to the famed "wolfhound" design.

The crown symbolizes royalty, while the wreath and 12 oranges represent an orange tree, a traditional symbol of the Dutch Royal Family --the House of Orange-- who are direct descendants of William of Orange, the first Prince of the Netherlands This unique honor was granted in recognition of the unit's contribution to the defense of the Netherlands and graphically illustrated the 32nd's close ties with the Royal Netherlands Air Force.

Below is a picture of one of our patches. Sadly I gave all of mine away  10

Heres a little bit about my division then

The 57th Division, known as the Gladiators, was originally called the Avengers. When we got to the war though, we found that another division had already taken Avengers. So, we changed the name to the Gladiators, and got new patches for them.

The Cougar Patch which is my avatar was made by Ford after a new member of the platoon requested it. Ford was honored that we'd carry their colors into battle, and sent a huge supply of the patches to us.

The Gladiator "Slicks" were the relatively unarmed helicopters that we used to transport marines to and from the PZ and the LZ (pickup zone and landing zone)

The zones were usually hot, thats where the Cougars came in. Cougar Gunships were the helicopters that were meant to escort and cover the "Slicks".

not really, there are some jobs in the CIA and NSA that aren't like "TOP SECRET" and then if he worked with the FBI it's not like they're a secret organization who keeps secrets, they're more like the Top Notch police

well I was at the latesed at NAEW&CF - Base Support Wing / Geilenkirchen / Germany - as a member of the Security Squadron, I was Branch Chief of Plans & Training Branch (renamed meanwhile to Force Protection Branch) - I had 3 section in my branch, NBC Defence, Training and Supply - well I had that on paper in fact all was mixed up most of the time.

NBC Defence:  is the easiest to explain - NBC Defence preparation for the entire unit, including detection, decontamination and predictions + Training and Supply for the unit

Unit Supply: lol gets tricky - normal supply for the Squadron and all weapons, ammo, explosives etc for the unit - includings a explosives specialist and amours, doing shooting and mine/UXO/IED awareness training

Trainig: - well my most diversificated section, having ppl in there for normal infrantry training, also for shooting, police trainers (since the security squadron was also police unit ...), civil guard trainer, dog trainers and a 1st aid trainer ...

my job was leader ship and the poviding of the needed plans for my section and concerning Force Protection for the Unit and our higher HQ NAEW&CF FC in / Mons / Belgium - in fact I did cut this down a bit 1st for keeping it readable and 2nd not to violate anything anyone could hold me responsible - since what I stated here could be recieved also via other open scources :-)

we conducted training in Geilenkirchen (boringly most of the time), Mons, Konya (Turky), Trapani (Italy), Oerland (Norway) and Prevesa (Greece) - byside this we supported the TACEVAL teams NATO wide with personnel if requested.

since the units mission is reccon and the radar covers a real huge area (3 ACs in the right position do cover Europa ...) we did not have any great war stories to tell - we supported the US after 9/11 when thier own E3s have been in Asia (we took care of the east coast in that time) and we secured the turkish boarder on thier request during the last gulf war.

I did 12 years of active duty 3 weeks extension tour (due to the gulf war) and left in summer 2003 as OF2 (military will know - other don t need to know lol)
