Station attack on rankings

i attacked armageddon in rankings.. and the station attacked my fleets.. its not supposed to happen like that, and it completely screwed my attack up.. it killed my pships in the attack before they could even touch his

if you jump to his local star system, it doesn't matter if you click attack in rankings, you will full assault him, i'm guessing that's why the station kicked in, you have to jump to a nearby star and remote from there...
