I've been playing for about a week now, and I'm doing fairly well.
I have 3 Fleets totaling to 31100 ships, and last time i checked i was around rank 211.

Fleet 1. 50000 ships
Fleet 2. 50000 ships
Fleet 3. 50000 ships
Fleet 4. 28000 ships
Fleet 5. 28000 ships
Fleet 5. 28000 ships

For a total of 215500 ships.  And if you don't already know, I'm rank 5.

It's not really a lot of ships.  Wait til we get mid-round, THEN people have lots of ships.  lol

For me, anywhere between 1 and 48k right now, but yea, later on, there will be fleets in the millions.
