1  Feedback Terminal / Suggestions / defence... or lack thereof on: September 25, 2009, 03:26:38 AM
ok... I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say for the past year or 2... this has not changed. (or at least wiki claims it hasn't)

so... I was playing astro empires and I think I may have an answer to a couple things.

currently: defense is multiplied by 5, then multiplied again by number of ships in fleet
then this is subtracted from the total damage the enemy is going to do.

--example: 100 ships with defense of 2, there total defense is (2*5)*100 = 1000
--example: 1500 ships with atk of 1... 1000 - 1500 = -500 (takes 500 damage)

proposed: let's make it a straight flat rate across ships. attack of ships (before any variables) gets a minus to it for the amount of defense it has to go through. then the new figure will then be used as the number to figure outt he actual attack

-- from previous example, how it would then go, with same ships:
-- example: 1500 ships with atk of 1, gets lowered by 2, this will be less then 0 so is set to 0.

what this will do: (as I see it work in the other game)
defense will become something useful for larger superships only.  it will make them immune to attacks of ships with attack less then there defense.
swarm ships will become much more limited in usefulness as if it can't do damage... it can't kill
superships hitting other superships won't be affected to much... as they will naturally have high enough attack unless it is to far outclassed (which in that case it's screwed anyway)

and if your wondering why I said it to be taken into account BEFORE shields and accuracy... quite simply it will have the least effect then, AND the easiest to code (not that this would be easy anyway)
2  Feedback Terminal / Suggestions / for the love of all that is good... on: September 25, 2009, 02:50:01 AM
would someone please put in a 'sort by distance' option for encryption contracts? preferably while retaining the ability to filter out all but certain levels?

I mean, what is it going to take to finally get that done?
some really old time famous player coming back from the void and start playing again?
3  Feedback Terminal / Suggestions / Re: Idea's galore on: February 15, 2009, 04:08:04 PM
hmm... I never thought of this... one of the biggest complaints of limiting ship size to number of workshops has always been the amount of segments you can possibly get to throw into them... compared to just how many you would need.  your suggestion gave me a rather simple idea... how about a modular shipyard structure that also allows bigger ships to be made... like it costs 1 credit to make 1 module, which enables 1 more segment to be added to ships (so max ship size able to be built is mothership workshops times 1000, plus amount of modules in galaxy you own)

but anyway, it's your suggestions tho... I just still find it funny that a mothership of 300k size is making ships 5000k big...

--edit: sry, forgot to add:
these would also get a bonus to cloaking, don't want them to easy to find... they also wouldn't block anything, they would be something other people would have to hunt for, but by destroying them, you could limit someone's ability to just 'bounce back' by making them rebuild the facilities to a point t hey can build ships again... which would also leave a good idea to spread them out, however would also increase the chance someone running into the system that has them there. this is also the reason for it being so cheap...

speaking of weakness's of powerful units... in the RTS/FPS MACHINES, the most powerful unit in the game, the gorilla, is seen attacking your base as early as the 6th level in the game.  however with all of the firepower they had, they also had a fatal flaw in them that made them easy to wipe out, even with units that early in the game.

what was it?

--edit:
after breaking out the game again, I realized the 3rd-4th mission isn't the one... it would be about the 6th, sry for any confusion
5  General Talk / General Discussion / Re: Great game on: February 08, 2009, 01:21:20 PM
meh, honestly, the reason why space o even caught my attention to begin with, and why I've personally stuck around so long (tho obviously not nearly as much as I used to) is the ship design system.

usually these days to 'make' something is really just to have component a mounted on vehicle b with the side option of c.  the only 'options' you get are what item to stick with another item.  you don't actually 'create' anything.

spaceo is the first, and so far even after all these years, the ONLY game, that has taken it a step forward and just give you the rules of what will happen when you design something, and leave everything else up to you.  if you build it big, it will need big resources.  build it small, you can build more of them.  the larger the ship, the more expensive it is.

and to that point, my only regret, is that there isn't more done with it.  sure you use the ships you make, and fight against other people's creations, but beyond building the ships themselves the actual differences you see amount to a different looking pic in the fleet screen, and varying text in battle reports.

anyways, that's my thoughts on spaceo

91. Has the Tiberian series of Command & Conquer ever been mentioned in the Red Alert series of Command & Conquer? If so, in what game and how?
Kane appeared multiple times in the Soviet campaign and it also turned out that NOD was behind the whole USSR thing.

94. In Command & Conquer: Tiberium Wars, the Scrin makes a comment about Kain's origins. What was that statement?
"This being already exists in the datacore gentic something unknown."

And an attempt at a question: What is the song that plays on C&C3's main menu.

close enough, technically I was just looking for the fact that kain made several appearences... tho you are right on the other point.  and just to correct you as I'm sure it's a typo, it was that he didn't DIDN'T exist in the genetic database (ie the scrin doesn't know WHERE kain came from, so obviously not earth... or scrin for that matter possibly 4th side?)
8  General Talk / General Discussion / Re: SO Collection...in BOOK form?!?!?!? on: January 29, 2009, 03:43:37 AM
laugh maybe I should interject here a little note for you guys that maybe a bit confused.  seither just said he's finishing up the final draft, not the actual book.  the final draft is (what I guess) will go to the editor to see if he likes it, at that point it shall be revised for spelling and grammer and all that stuff.  so it actually coming out will probably be a bit longer.

speaking of which, seither... knowing you there's probably plenty of spelling errors for you to go over? what is it now, 15 errors per page?  or 150? laugh

jk with you, though I am kinda interested in seeing what this 'revised story 1' shall be...  21
9  General Talk / General Discussion / Re: SO Collection...in BOOK form?!?!?!? on: January 19, 2009, 05:54:34 PM
cool deals 1

personally, I would think for around 100ish pages, I would think between 20 and 25$

tho keep in mind, over the past 2-3 years I've bought and read a single (JUST ONE!!) book and that was about 250ish pages iirc

so I wouldn't actually know pricing of good books, or even what a good book would be, lol.
10  Feedback Terminal / Suggestions / Re: segs for max ship size (again) on: January 11, 2009, 02:20:46 PM
yes... I heard about that... I figured it just meant since you were so high up the only people you normally attack were other people who were maxxed out.

are you saying that even if one WERE to max out, the only thing they can do is just sit there and wait until DDay? which at that point no one could stop them from launching it?

and while there at max, everyone else knows that no one can get above them, so the best h ope is 2nd or 3rd place, for the next month or so until again, DDay finally rolls around to lvl the playing field again?

and when it DOES finally reset, the people who did NOT make it to #1, still has no idea how to proceed past the point they got to earlier, which means the ppl who maxxed out before already have an advantage.

this doesn't sound like a game... at least not a game worth playing...  hit DDay just to be mocked at the prospect you -may- actually win... in reality the same few people probably gonna max out again.

now if we make it impossible to max out... this breaks the cycle of maxing out and hitting dday, to max out again.

the other possiblity is getting rid of dday... which I don't think ANYONE wants to do
11  Feedback Terminal / Suggestions / Re: take it or leave it on: January 11, 2009, 02:14:58 PM
I think that's the thing spayed... we come back from so long... and essentially the game HASN'T changed... what little changes has been made... has been turning AWAY people, not the other way around.

and besides, we DID play before making these comments.  for a while to.  so we DO know what has and has not been done
12  Space Odyssey Caffe / Whatever / Re: MacBook Wheel on: January 08, 2009, 01:08:28 PM

13  Feedback Terminal / "Bugs" and Problems / Re: Ship fails to attack constantly on: January 08, 2009, 01:01:25 PM
I also couldn't help but notice you said you 'put tons of weapons on the ship'

you do realize that every weapon system you put on a ship after the 1st one, you lose 1% total atk correct?
14  Feedback Terminal / "Bugs" and Problems / Re: battle log percentage incorrect on: January 08, 2009, 01:00:02 PM
yes... I know... again tho, the main point is that it said I lost 0% of my fleet, when clearly I did lose something.

and yes... I remember from before insurance supposed to be 80%... that was 64%.  unless those segments are being counted as worth that extra 16%, which in that case seems a little high... around 2 billion credits for 1.3k segments?  well... I suppose that may be about right.  but again, we all already know what's up with the mission fleets and insurance.

but like I said, the main reason for this is the fact it said I lost 0%.  battle log lies!  I think the battle log's calculator broke on this one.  laugh
15  Feedback Terminal / Suggestions / Re: segs for max ship size (again) on: January 08, 2009, 04:02:30 AM
... ok... do I seriously need to say this? really? ...

Maxed out ships can't be beaten either way.

I guess so...

a ship gets boarded and doesn't have enough marines leftover to fend the attack off, it either gets captured or blown up regardless of it's strength...  surely you know this?
