Hey guys this is a controversial subject in the math field but the math proves this to be true and i will show you a few examples where this is the case.

EX 1:
x=.999.......(... means infinitely repeating)
10x=.999.......
10x-x=9.99......-.999...
9x=9
x=1
1=.999...

what happens here is
1) i multiply the equuation by 10
2)i subtract x on the left side and .999.... on the right because they are the same number.(some at this point say the X's should cancel, but that only happens when you divide by X not subtracting. Because you actually have 10 groups of X's and you take away one of those groups when you subtract)
3)divide by 9
4)x=1 and the same x=.999... therefore 1=.999....

EX 2:

1/3=.3333....   <------------EDIT: This is in an incorrect statement
3(1/3)=3(.33333...)
3/3=.99999...
1=.99999...

what happens here is
1) first i have 1/3=.333...repeating becuase that is a fact
2)i multiplied the equation by 3 on both sides.
3) 3/3=1 because anything divided by itself is one.



These examples prove that 1=.9999...repeating. There are many other examples like 1/9=.1111... and so on and so forth.

Anyways, on topic. This doesn't really matter. It's not basis to change the foundations of mathematics or something.

it is the whatever section therefore i put it here because it is something that is really cool and the math is actually really simple. it is just substitution for the first problem and multiplication for the rest anybody should be able to understand. And this may very well change math. many mathmaticians know that the math shows this is correct but is conceptually wrong and math has never failed us before in any area. Math has always said the truth.

Emy your math is flawed.  Saying .999........ doesn't mean anything...  you have to take into account that there are more numbers after the decimal that can go on to infinity places.  Therefore you can't prove anything by using a ..... and say that 9.99..... -.99...... = 9.  Only somebody with downs syndrome would believe that.  If you want to use the amount of decimal places you have displayed then the correct math would be as follows:

x=.999
10x=9.99
10x-x=8.991
9x=8.991
x=.999

It only takes a simple understanding of basic algebra to do this... come on.  1=1  .99999=.99999   .0000000001 = .0000000001(not 0)

Go back to first grade

A common misconception is that most people do not realize it means infinitely repeating 9's. i do not mean the number .999 i mean infinite 9's so do not be rude when you dont understand the problem. .999... shows infinite 9's (sorry i just did not want to type infinite 9's) and if there is an infinite minus infinite it will be zero(because anything subtracted by itself is zero) therefore my math isn't flawed. It is just like saying 1/3 minus 1/3 equals 0 because it is subtracting itself even though the three's are repeating forever when put into a decimal.

No, you are an idiot....  Inifinity isn't a number.  It's a term, defined as that which numbers cannot reach, because numbers go on forever.  subtracting infinite numbers of 9 from infinite numbers of 9 fives you infinite numbers of 0s followed by a 1 because you can never get there.  That's the point

it is not followed by a 1. it is the same exact number. as i stated 1/3 minus 1/3 equals 0 even the decimal form is repeating forever.

This is your logic atm Gron

(1/3)-(1/3)=(.3333...)-(.3333...)
0=.0000000000000000000000...1

which is false

and .3 infintely is 1/3. The number will never have a 4 at the end it will infinitely be 3 therefore the answer is infinte .3. and if this is wrong still then disprove the first one super. instead of saying 1/3 then lets say pi minus pi. that is a number that goes on forever that we still use in everyday math and you can subtract pi from itself and it is 0 because anything subtracted by itself is zero no matter how many decimals

You aren't subtracting a number from itself.  You are subtracting a number which you have "defined" as an infinitley repeating decimal (do you see the lack of logic here?.   derp) and subtracted that number from a fraction that CANNOT be defined in decimal form.  This doesn't prove a thing.  1/3 - 1/3 = 0.  1/3 - .33333333333 = a very small decimal number.  If you continue to try to argue this you have down's syndrome.  straight up

3x(.333)=.999 repeating
Since they are multiplied by the same number math rules (and common sense) tells us that (1/3) doesn't equal .3333 repeating, we only use the decimal as a shortcut in math. This is my last post about this topic

Super the thing is that it is not a shortcut that we use. The answer and only answer to 1/3=.333 repeating. You guys arent grasping the conecpt of infinity at all.

this is a question then gron. why does 1/3 not equal .333 repeating? Because if you do the math you will get .333 repeating forever. no other numbers like there  will never be a 4 at the end.

I wanted to renew this subject by saying that I understand your issue with ex 2 but there has still not been someone who has disproven ex 1. The reason It works in this case because of 1 and .999...(... means infinitely repeating) being a converging number series due to limits.
