I`m just thinking, how much Hitpoints is one defencepoint?
Or, is it a good idea to design a ship just with defence instead of hitpoints?

Hitpoints apply for each ship individually. If you have 100 ships, each with 1,000 HP, and the opposing fleets do 50,000 damage, you loose 50,000 Damage / 1,000 HP = 50 ships.

Defense applies to the entire fleet. If you have 100 ships, each with 500 defense and 100 HP, and they do 50,000 damage, you loose (50,000 damage - 50,000 combined defense) /100 = 0 ships.

Unfortunately, if they did 60,000 damage instead, you would loose (60,000 damage - 50,000 defence) / 100 = 100 ships instead of the 60 ships you would have lost in the first example.

It's a give and take system.

Works great for what? Point is, for superships, its cheaper to go with HP only, as defence is 50 times more costly. On swarmers, sometimes its better with defence, as swarmers are (relatively) cheap and are built to work in groups, so defence will be added together + crew levels.

At the same time, remember that HP is significantly affected by swarm bonus. I can't remember if defense is or not.

Actually I found it effective to put a (relatively) small amount of Def in my supers in that crazy boarding round, once you got up to the big ships and went to 0 attack and heavy HP for boarding the Def helped some
