Riddle Number 15

Einstein wrote the following riddle. He said that 98% of the world could not solve it. But several NIEHS scientists were able to solve it, and they said it's not all that hard if you pay attention and are very patient. Give it a try:

There are 5 houses in 5 different colors in a row. In each house lives a person with a different nationality. The 5 owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, and keep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar, or drink the same beverage. Other facts:
1. The Brit lives in the red house.
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
3. The Dane drinks tea.
4. The green house is on the immediate left of the white house.
5. The green house's owner drinks coffee.
6. The owner who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
8. The owner living in the center house drinks milk.
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
10. The owner who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
11. The owner who keeps the horse lives next to the one who smokes Dunhill.
12. The owner who smokes Bluemasters drinks beer.
13. The German smokes Prince.
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
15. The owner who smokes Blends lives next to the one who drinks water.

The question is: WHO OWNS THE FISH?

BONOS: Solve the entire riddle, for all 5 houses.

4th Green German Coffee Prince  Fish
5th  White Sweed Beer Bluemasters Dogs

Given the information that there is only 1 way to draw a 5-point star, and that there is NO way to draw a 6-point star (in continuous lines, that is), and there are 2 ways to draw a 7-point star, how many different ways are there to draw a 1000-point star?

Riddle Number 4

If someone were to choose a random date between the years 2000 and 8000 A.D. inclusively, what would be the chance that day would be a Sunday (according to the U.S. Gregorian? (a.k.a Normal) Calendar, of course.)

It'll take a little research. Here's a hint, January 1st, 2000 A.D. was a Saturday.

If you want a really hard question, try from 1 to 8000 A.D., according to the Gregorian Calendar and taking into account all papal changes and their effective dates. But that would be nightmarish.

Yep! You've earned a !

Though it would be the "Past" and the "Future" by the way the question's presented. I like to call it "Yesterday" and "Tomorrow", however. I really need to find a way to rhyme that riddle, though. :hmm:

I also forgot the "always" in the first line.

I only had to guess twice... Anyways,

#9:

Sabrina had 50$
Samantha had 30$

I wuv algebra!

#10:

Umm, he carries two across, then goes back for the third one.

... Where'd a party magician get 3 Kg gold?

Here's one I found:

"God granted him to be a boy for the sixth part of his life, and adding a twelfth part to this, He clothed his cheeks with down; He lit him the light of wedlock after a seven part, and five years after his marriage, He granted him a son. Alas! late-born wretched child, chill Fate took him. After consoling his greef by this science of numbers for four years he ended his life."

How old did he live to be?

Birds, beasts, trees, flowers

Gnaws iron, bites steel,
Grinds hard stones to meal,

Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down!

That's easy (and you got that from that site with the riddles for the free 2-month xbox live subscription thing.)

It's time.

Hey lamma, did anyone ever get the answer to number 12?

Here's one I wrote, have fun!

Without it, you don’t exist.
You can find it if you divide the whole by the middle
It’s all around you
It’s a scientific improbability
It’s a mathematic mystery
And no matter how hard you try
You can’t blow this fact of life
Out of it’s proportion.

Ya, that's it, but I got it from The Hobbit (by Tolkien). It's waaaaaaaay older then X-Box live, and it may even be older then Tolkien.

Tankee, Lamma.  'Tis good fun!

#1
Mirror

#7 I've heard, but don't remember   :2:  Best I can think of is a wrapped corn dog...but that's not it.

#8
A cold

RR2
He borrowed the car

And Monkey's, the best I can come up with is a circle (for the o in you, 0 for being unable to be blown out of proportion).

Title: Re: Lammalord's House of Riddles
Post by: Lammalord on May 06, 2006, 03:35:54 AM
ya good responce... oddly i think its right

monkey you gave to much info on that riddle try to narrow it down... so that it makes it harder

once you said matamatical improboblity i instanstanly knew it was pie, then a circle figured out the riddle with a no bainer... now if you had made it more like this: it would of been more diffcult

Without it, you don’t exist.
It’s all around you
And no matter how hard you try
You can’t blow this fact of life
Out of it’s proportion.

if you take out all the scientific and mathamatic refernces in the riddle it wouldn't of made the riddle so easy to discover...

No, pi is not the answer to my riddle lammalord, lol, nor is circle. Keep trying. and lamma, was mirror or clone the answer to number 1 (12 on that site)?

You can live without pi and a circle, though it would be harder, but it IS possible, so keep trying.

Here is my riddle again, so all you people can see:

Without it, you don’t exist.
You can find it if you divide the whole by the middle
It’s all around you
It’s a scientific improbability
It’s a mathematic mystery
And no matter how hard you try
You can’t blow this fact of life
Out of it’s proportion.

And how about a cow for #7?  I don't know of anyone who eats cowhide.  Although, not everyone throws it away.  Hrm...

And the thing in the tree was a painted rhino that was tied to one of the branches...man, would it be pissed.

I'm guessing time for both 8 and R5.

8 is hard, I can't come up with anything that really fits the last part of it.  Another one that was close was breath.  But, again, neither one really fits the last part.

What is it that you can see, that i can see, but ''god'' can't?

Riddle Number 6

What is that which goes with a carriage, comes with a carriage, is of no use to a carriage, and yet the carriage cannot go without it?
Horse
person in the carriage
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

hmm...  2 more things come to mind, the wheels, and the driver. dunno about wheels, though, as that is somewhat important to a carriage...

wait, what about the bit in the horses mouth?  or the reigns of the horse...

Giving up on the unsolved ones is admitting that the riddler is smarter than you, the riddlee. Pride and/or testosterone won't have that, no ser-ee, they hate admitting that they've been beaten.

#7 Wind
#8 "S"
#10 Pickaxe?

what about all I said?  none of them was the answer?  if you had that much hard a time seeing it all, I suggested it may be:
1: wheels
2: driver
3: bit
4: reigns

if you don't know what the last 2 is, they are:

3: bit (what they put in the horses mouth)
4: reigns (they cords/ropes they connect the horses to the carriage)

no one has gotten mine yet, or guessed in a while:
Riddle Number 4

Without it, you don’t exist.
You can find it if you divide the whole by the middle
It’s all around you
It’s a scientific improbability
It’s a mathematic mystery
And no matter how hard you try
You can’t blow this fact of life
Out of it’s proportion.
-Monkey D. Luffy

Circle
pie
air
Since no one is right yet, that means Circle, pie, and air are incorrect. Let's try and get this right people, it's not TOO hard, but it sure as hell ain't easy.

And Zomg, counterfiet dollar was right!!!!! I'll be damned.

Umm, that's a boolean result, not a number result.

So, wrong.

WTF? You asked for a SYMBOL.  So I  gave you one.  It has nothing to do with numbers.

What symbol can be put between 2 and 3 to make the result greater than 2 but less than 3?

2.3

Sometimes it's the smallest things that people forget.

And for 5...wind, earth, water, fire?  (Go Planet!  Oh yeah...and heart...what a lame boy that Planeteer is...but he does have a monkey.  Extra points for that.)

Umm, that's a boolean result, not a number result.

So, wrong.

WTF? You asked for a SYMBOL.  So I  gave you one.  It has nothing to do with numbers.

... It refers to the result of the equation.

Since the result of the equation 2 > 3 is the boolean false, it is neither less then or more than any other number. Thus it does not fit the prerequisites of the answer. No need to go all crazy on me. :-\

What symbol can be put between 2 and 3 to make the result greater than 2 but less than 3?

2.3

Sometimes it's the smallest things that people forget.

And, yes! ^_^

That is correct.

if you click the blue pill it's
Username: blue
password: pill

After that, I can't find out how to go anywhere. I've tried changing the address bar and everything. Driving me nuts, there isn't anything in the source, nothing to clikc that I can find, and I've changed everything in the address bar, so I'm at a loss here.

678223072849, or 7^14, aka n^(2n)

Wow, nice, how 'bout this one? It's much less straight forward, I do believe:

What are the next four numbers in this sequence, and why?

1 3 5 8 10 14 16 20 23 27 29 35 37 41 45 50 53 58 60 66 70 74 77 84 __ __ __ __

Ok lamma...i laerned this long ago.there is a chicken,a fox and a sack of grain on one side of a bridge.the person has one arm so can only carry one thing at a time,if left alone the fox eats the chicken, same for the chicken and grain.what do you carry first?(also this counts at the other end of the bridge to so you may not leave chicken and grain ect.)and yes this is possible but takes a simple mind to solve.

Title: Re: Lammalord's House of Riddles
Post by: Chronos on May 26, 2006, 10:33:35 PM
C = Chicken
F = Fox
G = Grain
P = Person

Here are the moves.

FG --> C P   C
P FG <-- C   N
F --> CG P   G
P CF <-- G   C
C --> FG P   F
P C <-- FG   N
 --> CFG P   C

Then he's on the other side of the bridge with everything! ^_^

He moves the grain and comes back with the chicken.

He moves the fox and comes back empty handed.

He moves the chicken.

Then he's dones.

but...was the carriage one a dust cloud or the smell of horses?  (I'm guessing on it again due to that it has been up there a LONG time)

lammalord, what lonewolv was saying (I'm adept at reading the illegible) is that you tell the king to cut of your head without injuring any other part of your body. Because he mus injury your neck to cut your head off, he cannot kill you, so you get to live.

RR2) Did he run into the hotel, and the owner wanted money to compensate?
Is his wife the owner?
I already guessed that the man came to tell the owner that the hotel is getting taken away due to insufficient funds.  That one seemed right to me.

Time warping wasn't so uncommon then, I believe. If you can determine how far back a black hole'll throw you, there must've been plenty of research done.

Title: Re: Lammalord's House of Riddles
Post by: Seither on June 02, 2006, 01:48:29 AM
why are you talking about my story here? talk about it in my thread (A, you get post count for it, and B, it'll attract more people to read it) But yes, Chronos, you're right. It is such a normal thing that stuff like that happens all the time. Plus, it was about twenty to thirty minutes after he got the job that he arrived, so a straight Hyperspace jump would have got him there in that amount of time....that and CHOAM secretly knows everything that goes on in the galaxy.....

Title: Re: Lammalord's House of Riddles
Post by: Chronos on October 24, 2006, 11:41:45 PM
I took a looksie at some of the new ones.

#7 21200
That one was fun. I love number problems. ^_^

#9 Unless I'm missing something, there's a 1/7 chance.

(Added:)
Here's one:

If someone were to choose a random date between the years 2000 and 8000 A.D. inclusively, what would be the chance that day would be a Sunday (according to the U.S. Gregorian? (a.k.a Normal) Calendar, of course.)

It'll take a little research. Here's a hint, January 1st, 2000 A.D. was a Saturday.

If you want a really hard question, try from 1 to 8000 A.D., according to the Gregorian Calendar and taking into account all papal changes and their effective dates. But that would be nightmarish.

(Added more:)
Here's one I like:

I am a world-renowned "symbol". In the English language, if I'm added to a noun, it turns to an adjective (in most cases).

If you put horizontal lines through me, I become a currency, but it is not used in many countries.

In Spanish, I am a "symbol", but also I am a word. I am used to connect words and phrases. If you watch your School House Rock, I go along with a junction.

What am I?

Title: Re: Lammalord's House of Riddles

the first one is a trick question, it has multiple answers and no answer at the same time, therefore not a valid riddle.

The owner doesnt want it
The buyer never uses it
The user never sees it.

What is it??

I come first, follow after, end life and kill laughter, and empty holes I fill.

What am I?

If you have intellegence(/sleep/air) you lose intellegence(/sleep/air)?

Doesn't make entirely too much sense.

Will the next word you say be no?

If you say yes, then you lie.
If you say No, then you also lie.
If you say anything else, 1. you don't answer the question, 2. you don't say yes...

THEY walk into a sauna.

Man #1 has...A Walkman, one of those CD players, probably a sony.
Man #2 has...A Book! A New York Times Best Seller!
Man #3 has...A Thermos, one of those shiny silver kinds.

SUDDENLY shouts come from inside the sauna.
Once the steam clears, they find Man #2 dead on the ground, with a stab wound in his body.
Everyone is questioned, but the police can't figure out whodunnit.
WHO Killed innocent Man #2, and HOW?

Riddle Number 12

A man wanted to get into a members only club so he hid and watched the guard at the door of the club house. The guard said a number to each member as they approached, and the member would respond with a number of their own. If the member responded with the correct number they were let in. If they responded incorrectly they were thrown out. One member came up to the door, the guard said twelve, and the member responded with six and was let in. Another member came to the door, the guard said six and the member responded with three and was let in. Believing he had heard enough, the reject went up to the guard. The guard said ten, and the reject said five, but was not let in. What should the reject have said?
8

For this one - 8 might get you thrown out, but it is a correct answer to the series.  Dividing by 2 has been eliminated, so you need another series.

First the guy says 12, correct response is 6.  If you add all the digits up they equal 9.

So 12 splits to 1 + 2 + answer of 6 = 9
Next 6 +3 = 9
Then 10 = 1 + 0 + 8 = 9

Maybe not the answer required - but it is a solution.

Post by: Lammalord on January 24, 2008, 03:47:11 PM
fancy solution, but sorry its still not correct :) - hmm but it is tricky to figure out out and has a pattern :)

and for 10 it already had a right answer, was, well black on accident (hey its right next to red on the drop down!)

removed old answered ones added in a few more.. i decided to be evil this time and i am giveing you all a good chalange.. good luck!

9

T W E L V E = 6 letters
S I X = 3 letters
TEN = 3 letters

so the answer is 3..

Post by: Seither on March 06, 2008, 07:20:35 AM
Wow, still not one has got mine (RR1).....it's really not that hard, honestly, lol.

#5 is a riddle (why has no one guessed that? O.o)

and lol, nope zeph, I know #7, quite easy really.

#7 is H. The pattern is the place of the 1st letter of their first and last name. D=4 and L=12, subtract the 1st number from the 2nd one, thus, 12-4=8. 8th letter in the alphabet is H.

#12 I think it's the letters themselves, consonant and vowels, whci foot stoll would look like this: C=Consonant V=Vowel. CVVCCCVVC=FOOTSTOOL

Title: Re: Lammalord's House of Riddles
Post by: Lammalord on March 07, 2008, 07:35:09 PM
no. thats is not right.

for the footstool one..

you have to consider the WORD as a palidrome, not the letters..

HINT: its capitolized for a reason.

Title: Re: Lammalord's House of Riddles
Post by: Seither on March 11, 2008, 09:12:41 PM
ok then, my only other guess is if you flip the F anf the L over (aka upsidedown)and turn the word around the F and L almost look like each other. and the lower line in the F could technically be a -, which would be left in place. If that's not it, PM me the answer, cause it's driving me nuts, and I'll let other people have a shot at it.

Heh, wow, I was right on number sixteen.

It took some thinking. >_<

Basically if you hit every nth point (skipping every n-1 points) on a star of m points, you will touch every point on that star if and only if n is coprime to m.

So you pretty much have to count up all of the numbers coprime to m and less than m (good ol' programming languages making my life easier); subtract one because m-1 is coprime to m, because hitting every (m-1)th is basically drawing a polygon backwards; and then divide that number in half, because for every n that simulates skipping n-1 points in the forward direction, there is a different n that simulates skipping those points in the reverse direction.

Thus, you get:

399,
398,
199.

...And you know what the worst part of all is? I thought that up all on my own.

mmm well that made it more complicated that it was.. it had something to do with prime number lol in short (i dont wanna explain how)

there are 600 numbers that wont work and 400 that will, now you have to subtract 200 (mirror images) and then 1 wont work thus leaveing 199

Title: Re: Lammalord's House of Riddles
Post by: Chronos on April 28, 2008, 03:06:52 AM
mmm well that made it more complicated that it was..

Hmm, no. I looked up your answer from the source just now.

Pretty much the only difference between the two approaches is that I used a computer to calculate the number of coprimes and they just looked at the properties of numbers divisible by two and/or five.

In fact, my approach is more useful because I can apply it to a star of any number of points, and, well, let us just say that counting coprimes by hand can get darn pretty messy.

literaly means to look at excally what it says, dont use metaphor's exsample "holy crap that ice cream cone you have is as huge as a mountain" you dont take it literaly and it means a lot of ice cream... on the other hand if you did take it literaly the ice cream would be the size of a mountain...

She's gaining ton's... can i gain 2000's years? NO can someone gain 2000's of pounds? NO

You will know that I am coming
From the jingle of my bell,
But exactly who I am is not an easy thing to tell.

Children, they adore me
for they find me jolly,
but I do not see them when the halls are decked with holly.

My job often leaves me frozen,
I am a man that all should know,
But I do not do business in times of sleet or ice or snow.

I travel much on business,
But no reindeer haul me around,
I do all my traveling firmly on the ground.

I love the time of Christmas,
But that's not my vocational season,
And I assure that is because of a sound economic reason.
